What a joke! You have probably read it so many times. Many online "gurus" claim that affiliate marketing can make you rich quick and easy, but it’s not true. Affiliate marketing requires hard work – very hard. If you are new to the online business you may get fooled by such ads, but everyone with little experience knows they are untrue.

Recently I am starting to see a new mantra. "Forget affiliate marketing, drop shipping will make you easy millions!" Is it any different than the previous lie? I don’t think so. But there are very valid reasons why some people choose and do better with drop shipping as opposed to affiliate marketing and vice versus.

Let’s explore the advantages and disadvantages of both business models:

Initial Investment
You can start affiliate site with virtually no investment – even without the $9 for domain name if you decide to start an affiliate blog on Blogger or WordPress. You don’t need to buy any products although trying them helps. Getting your own domain and hosting is also better but many marketers save even these minor costs and still manage to make money.

In theory you can start a drop ship website for free, but your chances to success are close to zero. In practice you need a professional web store software, cutting edge design and paid subscription for a service that provides you with information and contacts of quality merchants. The initial investment of a drop ship web store is between several hundreds and several thousand dollars.

Clearly starting an affiliate marketing based business is cheaper.

Simplicity
Setting up an affiliate website does not require technical skills. Finding good affiliate programs is possible just by browsing few directories or searching Google. The hardest and most important work is attracting visitors and converting them into buyers.

For setting a successful drop ship web store you need not only to find the right products and providers, but also to constantly update the prices and inventory. You need to follow the competitors and adjust your price ranges to theirs. You may need to manually submit orders and answer support requests.

In drop shipping you are building an entire web store which is entirely yours. The customer doesn’t even need to know that you are not the merchant. If your customers like your store and the products you sell, they will come back again and again for more to it instead of going to the merchant’s site. You can also sell many products from different merchants to the same user by using a shopping cart. Your customers can purchase products without leaving your site. The profit potential of one good drop ship e-store is hundred times bigger than such of an affiliate website.

The final result is 2:2 if you count just the numbers. But I would put more weight on competition and profitability. If you are willing to invest some cash and hard work in your business, your chances for success are much bigger with drop shipping.

One of the most frequently asked questions on the Net is: "What should I sell online?"

Many people know what products they want to sell. However, they don’t know how to do this. Should they physically stock the products themselves or promote other companies through affiliate programs?

Drop shipping may be the answer for some website owners who want to become stockless retailers, whereby they keep no stock themselves. Instead they promote products on their website and get a drop shipping company to despatch these products for them.

Here are the steps involved in drop shipping:

1) You open an Internet Store with a shopping cart and accept credit cards on your site. You can also sell on Internet Auction sites.

2) You find a distributor who will "drop ship" the products you want to sell.

3) You open an account with the "drop ship" distributor(s) you choose.

4) You receive descriptions and images of the products you wish to sell from the distributor and put them on your Internet Store or Auction.

5) When a customer buys from your Store or Auction, they pay with their credit card. Your Store or Auction charges their credit card plus shipping.

6) You email the order to the drop ship distributor with the customer’s name and address.

7) Then the drop shipper despatches the product to your customer from the warehouse with YOUR business name on the package.

The drop shipper charges you the wholesale price plus shipping. Remember you have already passed the shipping charge on to your customer, so the shipping costs you nothing.

So that’s how drop shipping works. You don’t have to buy products in bulk and store them, hoping to sell. You don’t have to pay to have it shipped to you, and then pay again to ship it to your customer. All you had to do was send an email to your drop shipper.

As I continue to grow as an affiliate marketer, I strive to learn new and more diverse opportunities to make money online. Remember that the one of the most common suggestions of online entrepreneurs is to create multiple streams of incomes from many different campaign and programs. Further, understanding the multiple types of online money making programs helps you find the "niche" that will ultimately make you the most money.

For some, affiliate marketing may seem a bit intimidating: It is driven a lot by reviews, reports, advertising, promotion and sales. In affiliate marketing, you, the online entrepreneur, are just a middle man: You direct people to your site (or landing page) and it is your job to convince them to buy from another website. If you achieve your goals, you will receive a portion of the sales, lead or click that came from your site. There are a few downfalls to this:

1)You have no control over the selling site.

2)You must rely on their ad-copy as much as your ad-copy to ultimately make the sale

3)You lose sales tracking ability the minute the buyer leaves your site. Tracking sales to ad campaigns is very difficult.

4)You are competing against other affiliate marketers.

5) Relatively speaking, compensation can be low and out of your control.

For example, I currently promote a product that the website founder likes to change the price and the commission of the product very regularly. Some weeks I make close to $30 per sale, other weeks, less than $8 per sale (for the SAME product!). As an affiliate marketer, what I am to do? I either must grin and bear it or drop them as an affiliate.

So what other options are there to help reduce these issues? The closest program to affiliate marketing that reduces or eliminates the affiliate marketing issues is dropshipping. With dropshipping, you are actually selling the product; you are no longer the middle man. This is similar to buying wholesale and marking up the price for each product, but with a little twist! With dropshipping, you only purchase the product AFTER someone purchases the product from you. In addition, the product is never in your hands; it is shipped directly to the end customer.

For example, let’s say you want to sell ipods. First, you would find a dropshipper that sells the product (at a below market value to you). Second, you create a website, an eBay auction, Amazon Shop, etc. When someone makes a purchase, you return to the dropshipping site, place the order for them, include their address information and the sale is completed. Your earning is the price difference between the final customer cost and the wholesale cost + shipping cost + dropshipping fee. Let’s say that your wholesale cost of an ipod is $150 and you sell it for $200. The dropshipper charges you $18 for shipping and $2 for the dropship fee. Your profit on the sales is then $30.

What are the advantages over affiliate marketing?

1)Control of the final landing page and how the product is presented.

2) Less competition

3)Ability to set your own price and earnings

4)Ability to track your sales to completion

5)Less time required (in some cases) creating an avenue to sell the products (through eBay and Amazon, for example)

6) Potential higher earnings per sale (relative to affiliate marketing)

What are the disadvantages over affiliate marketing?

1)You are now required the action of purchasing each product after a sale

2)Setting up payment methods (though companies like Paypal make this pretty easy…they just take a percentage of the sales)

3)Direct contact with the customer

4)Finding the right product at the right price with the right dropshipper can take some time and negotiating.

5)Higher risk of fraud and poor dropshipping companies.

As similar as the two programs are, they are quite different in what they have to offer you. Affiliate marketing usually requires a bit more front-end work, but once the commissions start coming, the maintenance is fairly minimal. As for dropshipping, you can get set-up and going relatively quickly. With superstores like eBay and Amazon, dropshipping requires no custom landing pages and minimal promotion. This, however, requires a little more work throughout the existence of the campaign. The per-sale-action ultimately requires more work in the long run. Both work very well, but it is up to you to choose which one works best…maybe it is both!

If you find a product that is selling well, you can make a good amount of money off of it. You’ll find that most people that work at promoting their products will do well at selling them.
